Zen Garden > Procrastinate Now! by Gary Simpson

Have you ever had the opportunity to do something to better yourself then, for some inexplicable reason, just never got around to taking advantage of it? I think all of us have done that at one stage or another. Chalk it up to procrastination. Will I? Won't I? Will I? Won't I?

Have you ever had the opportunity to do something to better yourself then, for some inexplicable reason, just never got around to taking advantage of it? I think all of us have done that at one stage or another. Chalk it up to procrastination. Will I? Won't I? Will I? Won't I?

Your mind goes on and on like this until eventually some expiry date is reached and the opportunity is lost - gone forever! That is classic procrastination at work.

Some years ago I determined that I would procrastinate now. I got sick and tired of running through endless scenarios. I wanted to be a decision-maker. Decision makers get things done. Procrastinators get very little done.

Procrastinators are seen by others as blockers. A person who is a blocker is viewed as a hindrance. You probably know people like that. They cannot make a decision on anything. They are the people who throw up every obstacle to advancement. They want to "wait and see." The trouble with these people is that they are ALWAYS waiting and because of that they rarely SEE - results, that is.

There are three types of people in this world:

  1. those who make things happen -achievers
  2. those who watch things happen - procrastinators
  3. those who say: "what happened?" - the clueless

Procrastinators watch things happen. They are too frightened or too timid to participate. Then they become disappointed and down on themselves because they see others succeed.

Procrastinators are those who forever say: "If only I had... (fill in the rest of the sentence)." They are always looking back in disappointment and regret and forward with reluctance and apprehension.

If you are a procrastinator - and let's face it - YOU KNOW IF YOU ARE - then my advice is to procrastinate NOW! Get it over and done with. Procrastinating is a useless waste of time and talent. It achieves absolutely nothing. What is the point of it?

You really do not want to get a reputation for being a procrastinator. In the workplace that will be recognized among your peers and you will be excluded from projects because of it.

If you can't learn to become a person of action then - GET HELP! Get help now, not tomorrow, not next week, not next month, not next year. Seize the initiative. Overcome procrastination NOW!
